FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEContact: Kim Ippolito, Graduate Assistant to Sports Information Director, 630-637-5324Game One Box ScoreGame Two Box ScoreApril 8, 2014 – The North Central College softball team extended their winning streak to four on Tuesday as they beat the Elmhurst College Bluejays 3-2 and 4-1 in the third conference matchup of the season.
The Cardinals (19-3, CCIW 5-1) started game one in the hole as the Bluejays (9-7, CCIW 1-3) came up quick with the bats in the second inning with a double to center field that scored in the first run. It was then followed up with a single to center field that let in the second.
Starter
Vlasta Mangia (8-2) then held the Bluejays there as North Central had to pick up the offense. In the fourth inning Mangia doubled to the left side and ended up scoring on a wild pitch past the catcher, giving the Cardinals their first run of the game.
Entering the bottom of the seventh, North Central was still down 2-1.
Cecie Portillo singled to left center field to get the momentum going.
Kayla Antle stepped up to the plate and crushed a walk-off home run that scored her and Portillo, ending the game 3-2.
In the second game, started
Andrea Starr (8-1) gave up one run in the first inning from three singles. She held the Bluejays there as the Cardinals rallied in the second inning with single from
Jordyn Beck that scored in
Carly Trenhaile.
Trenhaile then picked it up in the third inning again as she hit a sacrifice fly to center field that got in Antle to push the Cardinals up 2-1.
North Central gave themselves more of a cushion in the top of the seventh with singles from Portillo and Antle.
Amanda Walker then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that got in Portillo with Antle right behind her running in from an error off the catcher.
The Cardinals ended the game with a ground out to
Taylor Ryan at second, followed by a ground out double play at second and first base giving them the 4-1 win.
North Central is at home again on Thursday against Wisconsin Lutheran College for a double header beginning at 3 p.m. at Shanower Family Field.
