(May 2, 2014)– The North Central College softball team couldn't get past day one in the 2014 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament after falling 2-1 in game one against Augustana College and 11-1 in game two against Carthage College on Friday.
The Cardinals (29-11) battled strong against Augustana for the majority of the first game as they tried to get revenge after being swept by them last week.
Cecie Portillo started it in the top of the sixth from a walk,
Kayla Antle kept it going advancing to first off a bunt. But it was
Kiersten Tinkoff who snatched the only RBI of the game off a double to right field.
Unfortunately, Augustana came back at the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer to take the lead. Pitcher
Andrea Starr received the loss as she held Augustana to eight hits and struck out four.
Game two against Carthage was a bit tougher for the Cardinals as they scored four runs in the first inning off of two home runs. Carthage kept the bats going in the second another four runs off a double and two singles.
Carly Trenhaile crossed the plate in the third off an error from the pitcher, but that would be the only one North Central would see as Carthage shut them out in five innings.
North Central still has a chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals which will take place from May 8-10. The qualifiers and brackets for the 2014 Division III NCAA Softball Tournament will be reveled early next week.
