ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Sept. 1, 2014) – The North Central College women's tennis team opened the 2014-15 season Monday, splitting a pair of dual matches at Augustana College's Lower Campus Courts, falling to the Vikings, 8-1 in the opener before bouncing back and defeating Loras College, 6-3.
In the opening match against College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Augustana, the Vikings (3-0) claimed all three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead.
In singles play, the lone Cardinal (1-1) victory came from
Clare O'Connor at the No. 6 position, downing Alyssa Reuter in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
In the nightcap victory over Loras, the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the Duhawks (0-3) as the combination of
Katie Drone and Jessie Degroot downed Kyle DeWees and Caroline Rainey, 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles position while O'Connor and
Kassandra Bernardo teamed up to defeat Sam Pietruszynski and Maggie Clements, 8-3 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play,
Miranda Grizaffi made quick work of DeWees at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-0, and Degroot came back from a set down to claim a 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory over Jessica Dickhut at the No. 3 spot. At the No. 5 position,
Kelsey Forking claimed her first victory of the season over Carrie Crabill, 6-1, 6-1, and O'Connor improved to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kelsey Woodward at No. 6.
North Central travels to Quincy University for a non-conference dual match on Thursday, Sept. 4, slated to begin at 4 pm.
