AURORA, Ill. (Mar. 14, 2015)—The North Central College men's tennis team held on to defeat Aurora University, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference dual match held at Washington Middle School.
Opening the afternoon with doubles play, the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead after the combination of
Connor Sass and
Ryan Doeckel downed Matt Butler and Jake Lipka, 8-3 at the No. 2 position, and
Kevin Davenport and
Adam Winters teamed up to defeat David Cross and Tom Asavarachan, 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, the Spartans (0-1) claimed the first three positions, but North Central (5-4) captured the final three spots to clinch the 5-4 win. At No. 3,
Winters shut out Butler in straight 6-0 sets, while Doeckel earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cross at No. 5 and
Tyler Ringle cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Asavarachan.
North Central travels to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for its annual Spring Break trip at the Spring TennisFest, Mar. 20-24. The Cardinals open up against Greenville College on Friday, Mar. 20 at 4 p.m. (ET).
