Apr. 14, 2015 - North Central College men's track and field athlete Luke Winder has been honored as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Field-Event Athlete of the Week for the second straight week, earning the distinction for the week of Apr. 6-12.
Winder was selected on the strength of his performance in the pole vault in the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships at the College of DuPage on Saturday. He placed first in the event by soaring to a personal-best clearance of 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches, breaking the North Central outdoor freshman record of 17'0 3/4" he set just a week earlier and moving into second place all-time outdoors at North Central and fifth all-time outdoors among NCAA Division III athletes. His mark is the best by a Division III vaulter during the outdoor season since another Cardinal vaulter, Peter Geraghty, cleared the same height to win the 2012 outdoor national championship.
The 2015 Division III indoor national champion in the pole vault, Winder owns the top outdoor mark in Division III by nearly a foot and has been bettered by only five Division I vaulters thus far this season.
The third-ranked Cardinals compete at the Wheaton College Don Church Twilight Meet on Saturday, which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
