Softball Breaks Even Against No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (April 18, 2015)­– The No. 10 ranked North Central College softball team took on their toughest College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) competitor this Saturday against the No. 6 ranked Illinois Wesleyan University Titans where they took the first game 7-3, but dropped the second 3-0.

The Cardinals (23-3, 8-2 CCIW) were on the board first in the third inning when Cecie Portillo walked to get on base, allowing Kiersten Tinkoff to snag 2 RBI when she smacked a home run to center field giving them the 2-0 jump. This was Tinkoff's second home run of the season and leads North Central on offense for the team batting .473 with 44 hits and 33 RBI.

The Titans (25-7, 4-2 CCIW) responded at the bottom of the fourth with one double and two singles to tie up the game.

With a huge fifth inning, the Cardinals put themselves back on top starting with Portillo and Tinkoff singling to bring in Kayla Antle, but it was the grand slam by Andrea Starr in left field scoring in Carly Trenhaile, Amanda Cooper and Bri Floyd that brought the lead to 7-2.

Illinois Wesleyan gave it one last shot in the seventh, but only was able to get in one more run, giving North Central the 7-3 victory.

In game two, the Titans put two runs on in the fourth inning from two singles and a fielding error. 

The Cardinals tried for the comeback getting three hits, but came up short on the scoreboard as the Titans added one more run in the seventh for the 3-0 win.

North Central brings the action back home on Tuesday against CCIW team North Park University in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
