Apr. 21, 2015 – North Central College baseball players
Ben Krusen and
Bobby Smith have been selected as College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Players of the Week, earning pitcher and hitter of the week, respectively, for the week of Apr. 14-20.
Krusen tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout in North Central's 9-0 win over Elmhurst College in the first game of the doubleheader on Apr. 18. Krusen struck out a season-high 11 batters, while walking just two and improved to 2-2 on the season.
Smith paced the North Central offense over the week in which the Cardinals' finished with a perfect 5-0 record, going 11-for-19 on the week (.579) with four extra base hits, while leading the team with nine RBI, 16 total bases and an on-base percentage of .619. He helped lead North Central to a three-game series sweep against Elmhurst last weekend, placing the Cardinals atop the CCIW standings. He finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in game one of the twin bill and followed with a 3-for-4 performance with a run and an RBI in the 8-1, nightcap victory. In the series finale on April 19, Smith was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, securing the series sweep with a 6-2 win.
North Central has now claimed four Player of the Week awards this season, as
Bryan Polowy and
Chris Hill each received the distinction earlier this season.
The Cardinals' travel to the University of Chicago on Wednesday, Apr. 22, with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
