Softball Closes Out Regular Season

April 28, 2015­– Wrapping up the regular season, the North Central College softball team split a doubleheader against the Aurora University Spartans on Tuesday, taking the first game 6-4, but dropping the second 9-3. The Cardinals (31-5, 11-3 CCIW) advance to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament held this Thursday and Friday.

In game one, North Central had a huge second inning that put them on the board first. With two outs, Andrea Starr took advantage of a fielding error to get on base. After Jenna Trojniar got walked, Olivia Goethals took that opportunity to snag a triple to right field for the 2-0 gain.

With two more walks to load the bases, Kiersten Tinkoff had no problem scoring in Goethals with a single to the outfield. As Amanda Walker came to the plate, she pushed in Kayla Antle and Cecie Portillo off a single perfectly placed down the right field line making it 6-0.

The Spartans (32-6, 22-0 NACC) tried for the comeback in the fifth inning, scoring four runs, but ultimatley falling short.

Pitcher Starr advanced to 19-3 overall this season with the 6-4 victory.

In game two, North Central struggled more on defense, unable to get a handle of the ball, allowing Aurora to score in multiple innings.

Walker singled up the middle to bring in Portillo to tie the game in the first inning. 

Carly Trenhaile hit a hard ball to shortstop to knock in Tinkoff in the third. But in the seventh, the Cardinals could only score one more run off a fielder's choice to bring in Antle as they fell, 9-3.

North Central competes in the CCIW Tournament beginning on Thursday alongside Illinois Wesleyan University, Wheaton College and Augustana College with location and times to be announced.
