Softball Gets 7th Inning Run to Defeat Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST Ill. (May 7, 2015) – Entering the bottom of the seventh with the game tied, the North Central College softball team used two singles to knock in the only run they'd need to snag their first win against the Lake Forest College Foresters in game one of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament held in Lake Forest, Ill. on Thursday.

The Cardinals (32-7) jumped on board in the second inning when Andrea Starr got things going with a single down the left field line. Jordyn Beck followed her with a walk that made it easy for Cecie Portillo to get two RBIs with a single to the gap in left center field to push ahead 2-0.

The Foresters (31-9) scored their first run at the top of the fourth with a single to center field for an RBI. Lake Forest gave it their last effort in the seventh and were able to tie it when they took advantage of a fielder's choice and walk to get their second run across home plate to make it 2-2.

North Central didn't die down after that as Kiersten Tinkoff singled up the middle to get things going in the bottom half. Bri Floyd pinch ran and was able to advance to second on a fielder's choice. But it was Corrine Rowe's hit down the right field line with two outs that pushed in Floyd for the dramatic 3-2 victory.

Pitcher Starr snatched the win for the Cardinals, advancing to 20-5 overall with seven strikeouts.

The Cardinals will take on Hope College on Friday at 9 a.m. as the round one winners. Lake Forest and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will compete at 11 a.m.
