DECATUR, Ill. (Oct. 8, 2016) – Despite a strong showing from the top-three positions in the lineup, the North Central College women's tennis team was unable to overcome an early 2-1 deficit after doubles play, falling 5-4 at the hands of Millikin University in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) dual at Fairview Park Tennis Center.
Millikin (6-2, 2-2 CCIW) claimed two of the three doubles positions to open the afternoon, as
Clare O'Connor and
Kelsey Forkin prevented the Big Blue from sweeping doubles play, coming back from a 5-2 deficit to take down Molly Angell and Melissa Donovan, 9-8 (7-1).
The Cardinals (4-4, 1-4 CCIW) were victorious in the top three singles positions, but were unable to secure a win in the bottom three positions to fall 5-4.
Katie Drone fought out a tough 7-6 first set win over Morgan Bettner at the No. 1 spot, then followed with a quick 6-0 set to earn the victory. O'Connor took down Paige Bequette, 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 2 spot, while
Kelsey Forkin cruised past Kelly Ruane, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.
North Central continues CCIW play on Tuesday, Oct. 11, playing host to Elmhurst College in the final home match of the fall season beginning at 3 p.m.
