Feb. 28, 2016 – Hosting its annual triangular inside the Res/Rec Center, the North Central College men's tennis team rolled to a pair of non-conference victories, including a 8-1 win over Webster University in the opener, before shutting out Dominican University, 9-0 in the nightcap.
Beginning the day with doubles play against Webster (0-1), North Central's
Connor Sass and
Victor Krueger fought off Juan Granizo and Ian Powers, 8-5 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position,
Aleksandar Vasic and
Wilbur Williams cruised past Carlos Gonzalez and Trent Purnell, 8-1, while
Oliver Moews and
Adam Winters teamed up to defeat Charles McGee and Zach Selby by an identical 8-1 score at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play against the Gorloks, North Central (4-1) was victorious in five of the six matches, including a three set win from Krueger at the No. 2 position, as the freshman dropped the first set 6-7 to Powers, but bounced back to even the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Facing match point in the third, Krueger rebounded to score three straight points, quickly turning the tables to secure a 11-9 third set win.
At the No. 3 spot,
Connor Sass made quick work of Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1, while Williams fought back from a 4-6 first set loss to Purnell, but responded with a convincing 6-1 win in the second set, while claiming the match with a 10-6 win in the third. With the match already secured for North Central, Vasic downed Matt Lang, 8-4 at No. 5, while Winters took down McGee in comeback fashion at the No. 6 positio 3-6, 6-2, 10-3.
Closing out the day against Dominican (0-3), the Cardinals once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, as Krueger and Sass teamed up again to defeat Camden Knights and John Mysz, 8-1 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2,
Ryan Doeckel and Williams came away with a 8-4 win over Tarik Abdullah and Hector Ramirez, while the duo of
Alex Kohlmeier and
Hayden Sass shut out Frank Lally and Chandler Allen, 8-0 at No. 3.
In singles play, Krueger made quick work of Abdullah, 8-0 at No. 1, while
Connor Sass rolled past Knights, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. At No 3, Williams was victorious over Mysz, 6-2, 6-4, while Vasic downed Ramirez, 8-3 at No. 4.
Cristobal Arias-Staines earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Lally at No. 5, while
Tyler Bussell improved to 4-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Allen at the No. 6 position.
North Central continues play on Friday, Mar. 4, playing host to Concordia University Wisconsin at 6 p.m. inside the Res/Rec Center.
