ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Apr. 16, 2016) – The North Central College men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Augustana College Triangular, falling 9-0 to the host Vikings in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) matchup in the morning opener, before bouncing back to defeat non-conference foe the University of Dubuque, 6-3 in the nightcap.
Augustana (9-9, 2-1 CCIW) opened the morning with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play, as the Cardinal duo of
Victor Krueger and
Connor Sass came close at the No. 1 position against Eric Pohl and Samuel Totten, but could not pull out the win, falling 8-6.
In singles play, the Vikings took all six positions, as
Connor Sass took Patrick Lenz to three sets, as the two split the opening two sets both with 6-2 scores, before Lenz won the third, 10-2.
In the second match of the day against Dubuque (3-14), the Cardinals (9-6) jumped out to the 3-0 lead after doubles play this time, as Krueger and
Connor Sass took down Ranfer Hernandez and Matthew Sablay, 8-3 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2,
Aleksandar Vasic and
Hayden Sass downed Justin Castro and Jordan Hamling, 8-4, while the Cardinal combination of
Ryan Doeckel and
Adam Winters shut out Zebulon Hill and Alvaro Blanco, 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, the Cardinals relied on their bottom three positions to secure the win, as Winters was victorious by retirement at the No. 3 position.
Hayden Sass cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hill at the No. 5 spot, while
Tyler Bussell made quick work of Blanco in straight 6-0 sets at No. 6.
North Central is back in action on Monday, Apr. 18, continuing CCIW play at Wheaton College with matches slated to begin at 4 p.m.
