WHEATON, Ill. (May 6, 2016) – The North Central College men's tennis team finished sixth at the 2016 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament, taking down Illinois Wesleyan University, 5-4 in the day two opener, before falling to Millikin University, 7-2 in the fifth-place match at the Wheaton Tennis Courts.
In the first match of the day the Cardinals fought out a 5-4 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University, coming back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play. Oliver Moew and
Adam Winters teamed up to defeat John Cordan and Bryce Dolan, 8-2 at the No. 3 position to earn the team's lone doubles victory.
In singles play,
Victor Krueger took down Kurt Meyer, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, while
Aleksandar Vasic was victorious over Nick Sagastume, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.
Tyler Bussell tied the match score 4-4 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dolan at No. 6, and with the match on the line
Adam Winters lost the first set 6-1 against Cordan at No. 4, but bounced back to win the second set 6-4. With all the other matches complete, Winters carried that momentun into the third set to complete the comeback win over Cordan, 6-2 in the final set and clinch the match win for North Central, sending the Cardinals to the fifth-place match against Millikin University.
Against the Big Blue (16-7), the Cardinals once again fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, as Krueger and
Connor Sass scraped out a 9-8 win over Emilio Tejada and Emerick Fulton at the No. 1 position.
In singles play, the lone Cardinal victory came from Winters at the No. 4 position, dropping the first set against Fulton, 7-6, but regained composure to win the next two sets 6-2, 10-7.
North Central ended the tournament with a sixth-place finish, closing the season with an overall record of 12-11.
