HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Mar. 17, 2017) – In the opening match of their spring break trip at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the North Central College men's tennis team overcame multiple deficits in singles competition, and showed poise under pressure on route to an impressive 8-1 victory over the Western New England University Golden Bears on Friday night.
In an effort that was sure to please head coach
Nick DeFalco, sophomore
Victor Krueger cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over David Kalmer at the No. 1 spot. Kruger showed resilience down the stretch, trailing in the second set only to eventually come back and secure the victory.
Senior
Connor Sass made easy work of Luke Surawski in the No. 2 spot, finishing with a 6-3, 6-3 win, while freshman
Tyler Haizel impressed at the 4th flight securing a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Sass and Haizel both fed off Kruger's resilience, as they both trailed early in the second set back overcame the deficits to win. Sophomore
Tyler Bussell earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory playing as the No. 5 spot.
In the most dramatic match of the evening sophomore
Kevin Lewis, the No. 6 spot, dropped the first set 1-6 to Kevin Yawgel. He was able to bounce back in the second, claiming the 6-4 victory, while completely swamping Yawgel 10-0 in the tie break.
In doubles competition, the Cardinals simply outclassed the Golden Bears. The duo of Sass and fellow senior
Aleksandar Vasic prevailed 8-4 over Kalmer and Surwaski.
Kruger and junior
Alex Kohlmeier would keep things rolling for North Central, defeating Justin Kohut and Daniel O'Neill 8-5. Bussell and Haizel's victory at the No. 3 spot proved to be the icing on the cake for the Cardinals, as they overcame Nick Raschilla and Vu Nguyen 8-0.
North Central will have a day to rest and recuperate, prior to playing their next match on Sunday Mar.19 at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center against Bunea Vista University at 5:30 p.m. (ET).
