Mar. 30, 2017 – Winners of five of the last six matches, the North Central College men's tennis team fought out a 6-3 win over NAIA foe Olivet Nazarene University on Thursday afternoon in a match moved inside the Res/Rec Center due to weather.
The Cardinals (6-3) began the afternoon taking two of the three doubles positions, as
Connor Sass and
Tyler Haizel defeated Adam Clark and Kyce Stewart by a 8-5 score at the No. 2 position.
At No. 3,
Tyler Bussell and
Adam Winters made quick work of Derek Bradshaw and James Carr, 8-2 while
Aleksandar Vasic and
Alex Kohlmeier fought Srdja Nikolic and Ryan Lingle to a tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot, but ultimately fell just short 9-8 (7-5).
In singles play, Olivet Nazarene opened with wins at the top-two positions, but North Central rebounded nicely to win the final four spots each in straight sets.
At the No. 3 position, Kohlmeier cruised past Clark, 6-1, 6-2, while Haizel took care of Stewart at the No. 4 spot 6-3, 6-1. Winters continued the winning ways for North Central at the No. 5 position, downing Bradshaw, 6-4, 6-3, before Bussell won by retirement after a 6-3 first-set win over Carr.
North Central opens College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Tuesday, Apr. 4, traveling to Elmhurst College with matches at 3:30 p.m. at the Brune Tennis Courts.
