ELMHURST, Ill. (Apr. 4, 2017) – Opening College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play, the North Central College men's tennis team turned in a total team performance on Tuesday to earn a 8-1 victory over Elmhurst College at the Brune Tennis Courts, the first win over the Bluejays since the 2010-11 season.
The Cardinals (7-3, 1-0 CCIW) opened the day taking two of the three doubles positions, as
Victor Krueger and
Tyler Haizel team up to defeat Brandon Fulmer and Kevin Osborn, 8-1 at the No. 2 position. At No. 3, David Wilson and Grant O'Connell were no match for
Connor Sass and
Tyler Bussell, as the duo swept the Bluejay pair by a 8-0 score.
North Central went on to sweep all six singles positions, as
Victor Krueger fought out a 6-4 first-set win over Kyle Endicott at the No. 1 position, before battling back from a 5-4 deficit and two set points to hold off Endicott and win the set 7-6.
At the No. 2 position,
Aleksandar Vasic downed Fulmer, 6-2 in the first set and had Fulmer down to match point in the second set before suffering a 7-6 loss, but rebounded to win the tiebreaker 10-4.
Connor Sass sealed the win with a 6-4, 6-1 straight set win over Jackson Lindquist at the No. 3 position, while
Tyler Haizel downed Osburn in straight 6-2 sets at the No. 4 position.
At No. 5,
Adam Winters cruised to a 6-1 win in the opening set over O'Connell before suffering a tough 6-4 loss in set two after holding a 4-1 lead. Winters showed some tenacity though and fought out a 7-6 win in the tiebreaker to earn the win.
Tyler Bussell was also victorious at No. 6, making quick work of Wilson, 6-2, 6-0.
North Central continues CCIW play on Thursday, Apr. 6, hosting Illinois Wesleyan University at 3:30 p.m. in the first match of a three-match home streak at the NCC Tennis Courts.
