Feb. 3, 2018 – Opening up the 2018 spring season with a triangular inside the Res/Rec Center, the North Central College men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker of an opener 5-4 to NAIA foe Judson University, before bouncing back with a 8-1 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering in the nightcap.

Despite jumping out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play in the opener against Judson, the Cardinals could not hang on in singles play as the Eagles responded to claim four of the six matches.

At No. 1 doubles,
Victor Krueger and
Marco Salazar fought out a 8-6 victory over Chris Veltkamp and Elisha Hougland, while
Tyler Bussell and
Lucas Pindak defeated Michael Bruen and Trevor Butler, 8-4 at the No. 3 position.

In singles play, the Eagles claimed the first three positions, while Bussell earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Joshua Gronowski at No. 4. Judson sealed the match victory with a win at the No. 5 position, but Pindak was able to take down Butler in straight 6-2 sets at No. 6.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals once again jumped out to a lead after doubles play, sweeping all three positions over MSOE, but this time rolled to a 8-1 victory.

Alex Kohlmeier and
Tyler Haizel shut out Michael Korbut and Curt Norton, 8-0 at the No. 2 position, while Bussell and Pindak cruised past Bryan Roob and Connor Splingaire, 8-2 at No. 3. Krueger and Salazar made it a clean sweep of doubles play, clawing out a 8-6 victory over Ryan Runke and Brad Phoenix at the No. 1 spot.

In singles play, Haizel finished up first at the No. 3 position, taking down Phoenix, 6-2, 6-0, while Bussell sealed the win for North Central with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Splingaire at No. 4.

At the No. 1 spot, Krueger made quick work of Runke, 6-2, 6-1, while Pindak defeated Korbut in straight 6-1 sets and
Jon Stroede earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Roob at No. 6.

North Central (1-2) is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10, taking on Wartburg College and Loras College at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, in a triangular held at River Cities Tennis Complex in Clinton, Iowa.
