DECATUR, Ill. (Mar. 30, 2018) – Opening up College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play, the North Central College men's tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 defeat at the hands of Millikin University on Friday afternoon at Fairview Tennis Center.
North Central (5-11, 0-1 CCIW) took an early 1-0 lead after
Tyler Haizel and
Adam Winters took down Greg Schwoeppe and Dane Pierantoni, 8-5 at the No. 3 position, but the Big Blue rebounded to take the top two spots to take a 2-1 match lead heading into singles play.
A win at No. 3 singles gave the Big Blue a 4-2 match lead, before
Tyler Bussell trimmed the lead 4-3 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Schwoeppe at the No. 4 spot.
Millikin gained another point with a victory at No. 2, while the Cardinals did not go down without a fight as
Lucas Pindak defeated Nick Laramee, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6. The match-clinching win for the Big Blue came at the No. 1 position, while Haizel earned a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Logan Bennett at the No. 5 position.
North Central has a quick turnaround with another CCIW match tomorrow at Illinois Wesleyan University, slated to begin at 10 a.m. at Beadles-Morse Tennis Courts.
