May 3, 2018 – Opening up play at the 2018 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship, the North Central College men's tennis team scored a 5-3 opening round upset over Carroll University on Thursday at Nike Park, avenging a loss to the Pioneers in the regular season.
North Central (8-15), playing as the tournament's sixth seed, opened the afternoon taking two of the three doubles positions, as
Lucas Pindak and
Alex Kohlmeier teamed up to defeat Chayce Roecker and Joseph Harrison, 8-5 at the No. 2 position. At No. 3,
Tyler Haizel and
Adam Winters fought out an identical 8-5 win at the No. 3 position over Quintin Lamers and Mitchel Gjerseth.
The third-seeded Pioneers (11-7) evened the match score 2-2, opening singles play with a victory at the No. 2 position, but
Tyler Bussell regained the lead 3-2 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Harrison at the No. 3 spot.
Carroll once again evened the score with another win at No. 4, before Pindak scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ben Trefilek at No. 6, setting up match point for the Cardinals. After clawing out a 7-5 first set win over Lamers at the No. 5 position, Haizel carried that momentum into a 6-1 second set win, clinching the match win for the Cardinals in the process.
North Central advances to Friday's 2 p.m. match, taking on the winner of Wheaton College and Illinois Wesleyan University back at Nike Park. The link to the tournament website is available
