KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Sept. 24, 2018) – Competing against the best players in the region, the North Central College women's tennis team sent four athletes to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional, hosted by Kalamazoo College over the weekend highlighted by four main draw victories.
The doubles duo of
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay became the first Cardinal doubles team to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA's since 2009, as the pair fought out a tough 9-7 win over Sarah Duran and Shannon Sertz of the College of Wooster (Ohio) in the opening round.
Advancing to the round of 32, Hougland and Kanthaphixay took down Hannah Bradvica and Alexandra Cash of Denison University (Ohio), before being eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16, falling 8-2 to eventual champions Jessica Liu and Madeleine Paolucci of Case Western Reserve University (Ohio).
Diana Barcelata and
Morgan House faced a tough draw in the opening round, squaring off against fourth-seeded Ashley Lessen and Allyson Persky of Washington University in St. Louis, as the pair hung tight but could not pull off the upset in the send, falling 8-4.
In singles play, Barcelata turned in a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the opening round over Ohio Northern University's Katherine Curry, before suffering a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Sydney Jackson of Hope College (Mich.), ending the seniors' run in the tournament.
Kanthaphixay was also victorious in her opening round match, earning a 6-3 opening set win over Rebecca Shiloff of Oberlin College (Ohio) before cruising to a 6-0 win to close out the match. In the round of 32, Kanthaphixay was eliminated by second-seeded Marjorie Antohi, 6-0, 6-1, as Antohi is playing for the singles title this morning.
After dropping her opening round match, Hougland bounced back to defeat Lake Forest College's Katie Wegrecki in the first round of the consolation bracket, coming back from a 6-3 first set loss with a 6-1, 10-3 win before falling in the second round.
North Central continues College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Tuesday, Sept. 25, returning home to the NCC Tennis Courts against Wheaton College at 3 p.m.
