ADRIAN, Mich. (Oct. 26, 2019) - Competing in their first-ever wrestling tournament, the North Central College women's wrestling team took third place in the Adrian College Open on Saturday. The Cardinals tallied 98 total points on the day by having six of their eight wrestlers finish in the top-four of their respective weight classes.

The host Adrian College earned first-place with 105.5 points while Lindenwood University nearly edged out North Central for second-place with 98.5 points. Gannon University (83), MacMurray College (72.5), University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (34.5), and Lakeland University (15.5) rounded out the teams.

Asia Nguyen-Smith began her day by pinning her first opponent in just :45 seconds. In the semifinal, she recorded her second pin of the day to advance to the championship match where she would face a familiar face. Nguyen-Smith won by tech fall against Amanda Martinez of North Central who would settle for second-place.

In the 170-pound bracket, Yelena Makoyed advanced in the first-round due to an injury forfeit from her opponent. She took down Gannon University's Amara Devericks in the semifinal to move to her final match of the tournament. In the championship, Makoyed pinned her opponent to take first-place in the 170-pound weight class.

Freshman Kim Nunez also recorded one pin on the day as she finished in second-place for the 155-pound weight class. Angelina Graff (109) and Malea Palahniuk (155) each finished in fourth-place in their respective divisions.

North Central competes again next Saturday as they head south to the Dr. Bob Kellogg Open hosted by MacMurray College. The meet will take place in Bill Wall gymnasium and is set to begin at 9:00 am.
