Makoyed and Martinez earn 3rd, Cardinals Take 13th

MARSHALL, Mo. (Nov. 17, 2019) - The North Central College women's wrestling team took 13th-place at the Missouri Valley College Open which contained 34 different teams from NCAA Division II, III and NAIA schools. Both Amanda Martinez and Yelena Makoyed earned third-place individually for their respective weight classes.

The Cardinals tallied 63 points at the meet as they had eight individual wrestlers take the mat. McKendree University took first-place (193 points) as they had two individual champions, while King University (Tennessee) finished in second-place (165 points).

Martinez won her first match of the day via a 9-6 decision in the second round, as she received a bye in round one. After losing to Alex Enriquez (Life University) by a close 8-6 decision, Martinez bounced back and beat her next three opponents (10-0, 10-0, Inj. forfeit) to advance to the seventh round of the 130-pound consolation bracket. In her next match, Martinez won by tech fall (12-2) over Andrea Schlabach (University of Cumberlands) to move to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Following a win in the semifinals, she moved to the third-place match where Martinez beat her opponent by a 7-0 decision to earn 21 points for North Central.

In the 170-pound weight class, Makoyed started the tournament by taking care of her first three opponents to advance to the quarterfinals. There, she fell by a 6-3 decision to Korinahe Bullock (McKendree). In the consolation bracket, she won her next match against Kiya Jones of Grand View University as well as pinning her seventh round opponent in just 34 seconds to advance to the consolation semifinals. Makoyed won by tech fall (11-0) in that match to move to her final opponent where she won via tech fall 12-1 to secure third-place and 24.5 points.


Asia Nguyen-Smith began (130) her day by rolling past Isabella Gonzalez of Grand View University by tech fall 13-2 in round two, after receiving a bye in the first round. She then pinned her round three opponent at the 2:44 mark to move into the quarterfinals. Nguyen-Smith suffered her first loss of the tournament to Anesia Ramirez of Southern Oregon University by tech fall, 12-2. Her day ended in the sixth round of the consolation bracket as she forfeited her match to teammate Amanda Martinez.

Kim Nunez (155) defeated her Tiffin University opponent by a 9-4 decision to move to the second round. Following a loss in the second round, Nunez came back by pinning her opponent at the 3:00 mark. She finished her day by losing a close battle to Vanessa Ceja (Wayland Baptist University) 10-9. 

The Cardinals next compete on Tuesday, Dec. 7th as they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a dual meet which begins at 7:00 p.m.
