NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Dec. 7th, 2019) - Competing for the first time in the North Central College Invitational, the Cardinal women's wrestling team took eighth place while junior Amanda Martinez took home the lone first-place finish. The meet consisted of 16 teams, nine of which were ranked in the top-17 for the December edition of the AmericanWomensWrestling.com Team Rankings.

McKendree University tearned first-place with 105.5 points while Emmanuel College (87.5), University of Jamestown (64) and Adrian College (49.5) rounded out the top-four teams.

After receiving a first-round bye, Martinez dominated her round two competition via tech fall (10-0) to advance to the quarterfinals. There, she recorded another 10-0 tech fall against Addison Young (University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) to move into the semifinals. Martinez again finished her opponent by tech fall to advance to the championship match against Sadie Tackett (Lions Wrestling Club). In the first-place match, Martinez concluded her day by earning her fourth tech fall victory to win the 130-pound bracket.

Yelena Makoyed started her day at the 170-pound bracket in the quarterfinals as she received a bye in the first-round. There, she defeated Alyssa Schrull (Jamestown) by a 10-0 tech fall. In the semifinal match, Makoyed notched her second tech fall victory of the day (12-2) against Faith Tuttle (Unattached) to move to the championship match. She was unable to compete in that match due to injury as she finished in second-place.

Asia Nguyen-Smith also received a first-round bye, as she started her day by beating her Grand View opponent via a 10-0 tech fall. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Alexis Altamira (Lindenwood University) by a 11-0 tech fall to move into the semifinals where Nguyen-Smith fell to Tackett. In the third-place match she won via tech fall 14-4 to earn third-place in the 130-pound bracket.

North Central competes next Saturday as they head north to Plymouth, Wis. to participate in the Lakeland University Muskie Duals.
