Feb. 26, 2020 – For the first time this season, a North Central College men's tennis player was named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Week, as
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez earned the weekly award after helping guide the Cardinals to a 2-0 week.
Gonzalez Fernandez went 2-0 in singles play at the No. 1 position, scoring a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Central College's William Isiminger, before taking down Concordia University Wisconsin's Christian Docter in the nightcap 6-1, 7-6.
The freshman also paired up with
Javier Suarez Balsera at the No. 2 doubles position, as the pair scored an easy 8-1 win over David Boschma and Trey Melvin of Central, before a 8-4 defeat of Concordia Wisconsin's Docter and Cole Werning.
Gonzalez Fernandez is now 10-3 on the season in singles play atop the Cardinal lineup, including a 6-1 showing in duals, while posting a 7-3 record with Suarez Balsera in doubles play.
North Central (4-3) begins its annual Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida on Sunday, Mar. 1, taking on Oglethorpe University at the USTA National Campus with matches scheduled for 12 p.m. (ET).
