DECATUR, Ill. (Sept. 12, 2021) - Opening their season at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Fall Tournament, the North Central College men's tennis team won three of the six singles flights and the No. 1 doubles flight in the two-day event hosted by Millikin University.
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez began the No. 1 singles flight with a 6-0, 6-0 win over his Illinois Wesleyan opponent before taking down Daniel Moore of Carthage 6-3, 6-2 to move into the championship match. Vilarroig Martinez beat Arthur Hermange of Augustana (6-3, 7-6 (8-6) to secure first-place.
Javier Suarez Balsera earned wins in both the second and third rounds of the flight to finish in fifth.
In the No. 2 flight,
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez won his first two matches to advance to the championship. There, he took down Nicolas Welker of Carthage 6-4, 6-0 earning himself the No. 2 flight title.
Matthew Sengphommachanh (No. 3) and Dieter Gonzalez (No. 5) each locked up third-place finishes in their respective flights while
Morgan Red and
Steven Mears both advanced to the third-place match in the fourth flight which was not played due to teammates being in the same match.
Daniel Urraca and
Douglas Blomquist posted first and second-round wins in the No. 6 singles flight to move into the first-place match which was also not played due to teammates being in the same match.
In doubles play, Vilarroig Martinez and Suarez Balsera teamed up to win the No.1 doubles flight while
Andy Hinch and Gonzalez Fernandez took fifth. The duo of Sengphommachanh/Red took third at the No. 2 doubles flight while Blomquist and Mears also earned third place in the No. 3 doubles flight.
The Cardinals compete next in The Battle of the Birds on Sunday, Sept. 19th. The event is hosted by Carthage and begins at 9 AM.
