KENOSHA, Wis. (Sept. 19, 2021) - Participating in the Inaugural Battle of the Birds, the North Central men's tennis team squared off against the host Carthage College, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and the Illinois Institute of Technology on Sunday.
Flight #1 found
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and
Javier Suarez Balsera team up as doubles partners. The duo went 1-1 on the day with an 8-2 win over their Scarlet Hawk opponent. In singles play, they each split their contests by falling to the Warhawks in round one as Villarog Martinez won 8-1 over Roman Shishlov (IIT) while Suarez Balsera earned an 8-2 victory over Pable Borque of IIT.
Andy Hinch and
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez fell in a tightly contested doubles match, 8-7 in the first round of Flight #2 before losing each of their singles matches as well.
North Central secured their first doubles win of the day as
Matthew Sengphommachanh and
Morgan Red took down the UWW tandem 8-5 before each won their singles matches 8-6 in round one of Flight #3. Red earned an 8-2 victory over Tripp Schulte in the second round of doubles play.
Facing the host Firebirds in round one of the fourth flight, Dieter Gonzalez and Daniel Urraca Mozos gnawed out an 8-7 win in doubles play. Urraca Mozos secured a singles win in round two by taking down Hayden Friese 8-5.
In the fifth and final flight,
Steven Mears and
Douglas Blomquist swept singles play in the second round by defeating Balen Mautone and Zach Kozmer, respectively.
On deck for the Cardinals is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals. The three-day event begins on Oct. 1st in Kalamazoo, Mich. inside of Stowe Stadium.
