KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Sept. 26, 2021) - Playing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Regional Championships, the North Central College women's tennis team sent a trio of singles players and two doubles teams that hit the court at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich. this past weekend.

Alaina Kanthaphixay opened singles play by defeating Anna Winslow of Kenyon College 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round. Awaiting her was No. 1 seed Sylwia Mikos of the University of Chicago where she fell 6-0, 6-0 to end her singles competition.

Coming into the tournament ranked No. 9, Kaeli Smashey beat Kathleen McLeod (St. Mary's University) 6-2, 6-1 before falling 7-5, 6-4 to Erin Storrer of Otterbein University in the round of 32. 

Hannah Hougland bounced back after an opening-round loss to Lauren Park of Chicago who was the 2019 ITA Singles Regional Champion, 6-1, 6-3 by beating Ellen Gardner of DePauw in the backdraw. In the round of 16, she took down CCIW Foe Lili Schoeck of Augustana. Now competing in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, she lost to Nikol Obradovic of Millikin to end her singles tournament.

In doubles play, Hougland and Kanthaphixay won 8-0 over their Millikin opponents to move into the second round where they faced Campbell/Gulli of St. Mary's. Looking to advance, the Cardinal duo won 8-4. In the quarterfinals, the tandem fell to No. 4 Beshentseva/Vazquez to end their tournament run.

Teaming up with Smashey was Sydney Sawyer as they fell to the No. 3 seeded team from Denison University, 8-6 in the opening round. On the consolation side of things, Smashey/Sawyer defeated Valade/Jost (Albion College) 8-2. Facing the No. 5 seed from Hope College, the Cardinal duo fell 8-1 in the consolation quarterfinals.

Next up for the Cardinals is a CCIW match with Augustana on Oct. 3rd. The event is set to begin a 12 PM at the Benet Academy Tennis Courts.
