ADRIAN, Mich. (Nov. 13, 2022) - The North Central College women's wrestling team took a trip up to Michigan to compete in the Adrian College Duals where they dismantled the field by taking down three ranked opponents on their way to a perfect 7-0 record.
In their first dual of the event, the Cardinals would square off against Indiana Tech. Indiana Tech would score the first points of the dual as Amber Turner (101) fell to Makayla Young by a 10- technical fall. The Cardinals would win the next two matches as Trinity Malave (109) pinned Sydney Kutzke before Amaya Yoshizumi (116) would defeat Emma Jones by an 8-2 decision to put the Cardinals up 8-5. In the 123-pound bout, Dakota Drew would fall to Andrea Hernandez before Sara Sterner (130) would pin Charmayne Delon to put the Cardinals back on top 13-10. Indiana Tech would win the 136 and 143 pound matches both by Technical fall, and would lead the Cardinals 18-13 going into the final three matches. In the 155-pound match, No. 5 Malea Palahniuk would pin Cydney Bassett before No. 1 Yelena Makoyed (170) would pick up the Cardinals third pin of the dual to give them a 25-18 advantage heading into the 191-pound match. No. 4 Brittyn Corbishley (191) finished off the dual with a 12-0 technical fall over Catherine McNulty to give the Cardinals a 29-18 win.
The Cardinals would face Emory & Henry College in the second dual of the day and they would jump out to a 15-0 lead after Turner (101), Maddie Avila (109) and Elizah Leonard (116) all won their matches by forfeit. Drew (123) kicked off the first match of the dual with a commanding 14-0 technical fall win over Carrie Jennigs to extend the Cardinal lead to 19. The Cardinals would drop the 130-pound match as Dafne Aguilar Martinez would pin Charlene Bahnfleth to cut the Cardinal lead to 14. The Cardinals found themselves up 34-5 as Raena Schledwitz (136), Sydney Park (143) and Shelby Ottum (155) all received wins by forfeit. In the 170-pound bout, Ella Tallent would defeat Sadie Hill before Alondra Aguayo (191) would finish the dual off with a 7-0 decision win over Brittney Reed, giving the Cardinals a 37-10 win.
In their third dual of the day, the Cardinals faced their first ranked opponent, No. 7 Tiffin University. Turner (101) kicked things off for the Cardinals as she won her match by forfeit giving the Cardinals an early 5-0 lead. No. 1 Sydney Petzinger (109) extended the Cardinal lead with a dominant 10-0 technical fall win over No. 8 Jenavi Alejandro before No. 3 Kendra Ryan (116) would pin Leah Pekar to put the Cardinals up 14-0. No. 3 Amani Jones (123) would add five more points to the Cardinals lead as she won by forfeit. Sterner (130) had yet another impressive win as she defeated Mackenzie Buck by a 10-0 technical fall before Emma Grimm (136) pinned Tatiana Bermudez to put the Cardinals out in front 28-0. Riley Aamold (143) won her match by forfeit before Palahniuk (155) defeated Erin Martin by a 10-0 technical fall to give the Cardinals a commanding lead. Makoyed defeated Taryn Marin by a 12-0 technical fall in the 170-pound weight class before Maren Anderson (191) would win by forfeit, giving the Cardinals a 49-0 win.
The Cardinals faced Northern Michigan University in round four and in the 101-pound bout, Turner would fall to Trinity Valentin in the first match, putting the Cardinals down 3-1. No. 5 Angelina Graff (109) would put the Cardinals up by three as she won her match by forfeit before Yoshizumi defeated Bryn Sandhu by a 10-0 technical fall, extending the Cardinals lead to 10-3. Drew (123) defeated Alejandra Perez by a 13-0 technical fall before Halle White (130) would defeat Sharon Leon by a 13-2 technical fall to put the Cardinals out in front 18-4. The Cardinals would drop the 136 and 143-pound matches but No. 4 Sara Sulejmani (155) would get the Cardinals back on the board as she pinned Lydia Krauss, scoring five more team points. North Central would fall in the 170-pound bout but Aguayo (191) would win her match by forfeit, giving the Cardinals a 29-17 win.
North Central faced No. 13 Sacred Heart in the fifth round but Sacred Heart's Aaliyah Payne-Parris would defeat Karina Torres in the 101-pound bout to give them an early 5-0 lead. However, the Cardinals would respond as Ryan (109) would pin Ashia Torres before No. 2 Jaslynn Gallegos would defeat Nohea Moniz by fall to give the Cardinals a 10-5 lead. Jones picked up the Cardinals third win by fall as she pinned Tatianna Walker in the 123-pound bout. White defeated Ayeska Zanetti by an 11-0 technical fall in the 130-pound match before Yele Aycock (136) defeated Jullia Mullane by a 10-0 technical fall to put the Cardinals up 23-5 with four matches remaining. Kendall Bostelman defeated Selena Sifuentes Shaffer in the 143-pound match by a 10-0 technical fall before Sulejmani (155) would pick up the Cardinals fourth-straight technical fall by defeating Madison Sandquist 12-2. Makoyed (170) extended the Cardinal lead to 30 as she pinned Jacklyn Smith before Corbishley (191) finished off the dual by pinning Cara Broadus to give the Cardinals a 41-6 win.
In round six the Cardinals would square off with the three-time defending National Champions, McKendree University. McKendree got the upper hand early as No. 2 Lizette Rodriguez defeated Torres by an 11-0 technical fall in the 101-pound match, putting them up 4-0. Petzinger (109) would defeat No. 7 Pauline Granados by a 4-1 decision but the Cardinals would still be down 5-3 after Granados scored a team point for McKendree. In the 116-pound bout, Gallegos pinned Elvie Villa in the first period to give the Cardinals a 8-6 lead. The Cardinals would drop the next two matches as Jones (123) fell to No. 6 Payton Stroud by a nail biting 6-5 decision and Sterner would fall to No. 1 Cameeron Guerin by an 11-0 technical fall. North Central would head into the second half of the dual down 12-9. Aycock (136) would get the Cardinals back on the board as she pinned Jennifer Soto in the first period before Bostelman would earn another first period pin for the Cardinals, defeating Shainia Murry to give the Cardinals a 19-12 advantage. In the 155-pound match, London Houston defeated Jazzmine Seely by a 10-0 technical fall before Makoyed would pin No. 7 Alexandra Castillo to put the Cardinals up 28-12. Corbishley (191) would finish off the dual with a win by forfeit, giving the Cardinals a 33-12 win over fourth-ranked McKendree.
The Cardinals were looking to remain perfect in their final dual of the day as they faced Hiram College. Turner kicked off the dual with a win by forfeit in the 101-pound weight class before Graff (109) defeated Kylee Bently by a 10-0 technical fall to put the Cardinals up 9-0. Trinity Malave won her match at 116-pounds by forfeit before Yoshizumi (116) defeated Kenedi Keesy by a 10-0 technical fall to put the Cardinals up by 18. White defeated Bethany Smith by a 10-0 technical fall in the 130-pound bout before Leah Bishop pinned Erika Novak in the first period, giving the Cardinals a commanding 27-0 lead. Sydney Park won her match at 143-pounds as she defeated Allydia Byard by a 12-1 technical fall before Houston (155) tacked on five more points for the Cardinals with a win by forfeit. Palahniuk (170) picked up another four points for the Cardinals as she defeated Addison Disman by a 10-0 technical fall before Anderson (191) finished off the dual with a win by forfeit to give the Cardinals a 45-1 win over Hiram College.
The Cardinals posted a perfect 7-0 record while recording 17 pins, 19 technical falls and outsourcing their opponents 268-64 in their seven duals. The Cardinals are back in action today as they compete in the Adrian Open inside the Merillat Center.
