Women’s Wrestling Crowned NCC Open Champions

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Dec. 11, 2022) - The North Central College women's wrestling team battled with some of the top-teams in the country on their way to their first ever North Central College Women's Open Championship. The Cardinals saw Amani Jones claim the 123-pound title while 15 wrestlers finished within the top-six, four of them finishing second. 

The tournament competition was fierce as it saw seven Top-25 teams including No. 1 King University, No. 3 McKendree University and No. 5 Augsburg University. Individually, the field consisted of 39 ranked wrestlers while eight of the ten No. 1-ranked wrestlers were all in attendance. 

The Cardinals claimed the top spot, scoring 156.5 team points while King was the runner-up with 146 points and Augsburg took home third with 120 points. Indiana Tech scored 96 points for a fourth place finish while McKendree rounded out the top-five with 83.5 points. 

In the 101-pound weight class, Maddie Avila moved on to the quarterfinals following a first round bye. Avila would kick off her first match of the day with an 8-2 decision win over Makayla Young of Indiana Tech before falling to Jessica Corredor of King, the third-ranked wrestler in 101-pounds, by a 12-2 technical fall. In the consolation semifinals, Avila would defeat Sydney Kutzke of Indiana Tech by an 8-0 decision before pinning Young to claim third place. Angelina Graff received a bye in the first round of the 101-pound bracket before defeating Whitley Blake of Indiana Tech by a 10-0 technical fall. Avery Kibelbek of King, the fifth-ranked wrestler in 101-pounds, would defeat Graff in the semifinals by a 4-2 decision, pushing her into the consolation semifinals. Graff would fall to Young by a 10-0 technical fall but would bounce back with a win over Kutzke to take home fifth place. 

Sydney Petzinger, the No.1-ranked wrestler in 109-pounds, received a bye in the first round before defeating Alexis Winecke of UW-Stevens Point by a 10-0 technical fall to advance to the quarterfinals. Petzinger picked up her second-straight technical fall as she defeated Gada Bryant of Eureka 10-0 to put her in the semifinals match against Dianna Holmes. Petzinger would move into the championship match after defeating Holmes, the third-ranked wrestler in 109-pounds, by an 8-2 decision. Petzinger and Sage Mortimer of King, the second-ranked wrestler in 109-pounds, would square off in the championship match where Petzinger would fall by an 8-2 decision in a battle of the top-two ranked wrestlers in the weight class. 

Kendra Ryan, the fifth-ranked wrestler in 109-pounds, received a first round bye before pinning Samantha Kruize of McKendree to push her into the quarterfinals. Ryan would pick up her second win of the day as she defeated Tehani Soares of Indiana Tech University by a 10-0 technical fall but would fall in the quarterfinals to No. 2 Mortimer. In the consolation semifinals, Ryan would take on No. 8 Pauline Granados of McKendree where she would pin Granados to move into the third place match against No. 3 Holmes. Holmes would get the upperhand in the third place match and defeat Ryan by a 9-6 decision, Ryan would take home fourth place honors. 

In the 116-pound weight class, Jaslynn Gallegos, the No. 1-ranked wrestler, received a bye in the first round before pinning Morgan Bethea of UW-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals match against No. 3 Danielle Garcia of King, Gallegos would win by fall to put her into the championship match. Gallegos would square off with No. 2 Samara Chavez of King but would fall to Chavez in the top-ranked match to take home second place. Amaya Yoshizumi, the eighth-ranked wrestler in 116-pounds, kicked off the tournament with a 12-0 technical fall over Jennifer Villagomez of Carthage College before falling to No. 3 Garcia in the quarterfinals. Yoshizumi would bounce back and earn two technical fall wins over Kelsey Novogradac of Davenport and Bethea of UW-Stevens Point to put her into the consolation semifinals. Yoshizumi would pin Elvie Villa of McKendree to put her into the third place match but she would fall to Garcia once again, taking home fourth place. 

In the 123-pound weight class, Amani Jones, the sixth-ranked wrestler, received a bye in the first round before defeating Isabelle Silva of Indiana Tech by a 10-0 technical fall to move into the quarterfinals. Jones would defeat Melanie Mendoza of King by a 6-2 decision before defeating No. 5 Payton Stroud of McKendree by a 9-1 decision to put her in the championship match against No. 3 Vayle-rae Baker of King. Jones would claim first place honors as she defeated Baker by a 10-3 decision. Sara Sterner received a bye in the first round of the 130-pound bracket before pinning Alicia Felker of Augustana. Sterner would defeat Cayden Condit of Lindenwood, the No. 2-ranked wrestler in 123-pounds, by a 14-4 technical fall, pushing her into the semifinals. Sterner would fall in the semifinals by an 8-2 decision against Jennifer Soto of McKendree, putting her in the consolation side of the bracket. Sterner would bounce back by pinning Autumn Flanigan of Augsburg University before falling to Cameron Guerin of McKendree, the No. 1-ranked wrestler, by a 6-0 decision. 

Yele Aycock, the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 136-pounds, received a bye in the first round before pinning Natalie Kutzil of Rochester, pushing her into the quarterfinals. Aycock would advance once again as she defeated Glenda Veiga of Indiana Tech by a 12-0 technical fall before defeating Viktorya Torres of King, the fifth-ranked wrestler in 143-pounds, by a 10-4 decision. Aycock would face No. 1 Nina Makem of Augsburg, who recently defeated Aycock by an 8-6 decision. Aycock took home second place after falling to Makem by a 4-3 decision. 

Kendall Bostelman, the fourth-ranked wrestler in 143-pounds, received a bye in the first round before pinning Carley Anderson of Indiana Tech to move into the quarterfinals. Bostelman would defeat Kya Rybachek of Augsburg by a 12-2 technical fall before falling to No. 3 Katie Lange of Augsburg in the semifinals. Bostelman would bounce back with two pins over teammate Salome Walker and Kelly Escamilla of Lindenwood to take home third place. Walker also received a first round bye before defeating Marisa Roth of Northern Michigan by a 12-0 technical fall. However, Walker would fall in the quarterfinals to Samantha Snow of Indiana Tech but would bounce back with a 12-0 technical fall win over Adele Senzig of Carthage. In the consolation fifth round, Walker would defeat teammate Riley Aamold by a 10-3 decision before falling to Bostelman in the consolation semifinals. Walker would take home fifth place after winning by Injury default. 

Tiera Jimerson received a bye in the first round of the 155-pound bracket before pinning Erin Riggle of Indiana Tech to advance to the quarterfinals. Jimerson would fall to Brooklyn Hays of Augsburg by a 9-3 decision before defeating teammate Shelby Ottum by a 10-0 technical fall in the consolation fourth round. Jimerson picked up another technical fall as she defeated Noelle Gaffney of Northern Michigan 10-0. In the consolation semifinals, Jimerson squared off with teammate Malea Palahniuk, the sixth-ranked wrestler, and would pin Palahniuk to move into the third place match where she would defeat Tiffani Baublitz of King by a 5-0 decision. 

Following a first round bye, Palahniuk defeated Grace Doering Indiana Tech by a 10-0 technical fall before picking up a 4-0 decision win over Jade Herzer of UW-Stevens Point in the 155-pound quarterfinals. Palahniuk would drop the next two matches but would defeat teammate London Houston to take home fifth place. Houston defeated Lizzie Brooksher of Eureka by a 10-0 technical fall following a first round bye. Houston would fall to No. 1 Deede in the quarterfinals before picking up two straight technical fall wins over Alana Duggan of Lindenwood and Herzer of UW-Stevens Point. In the consolation semifinals, Houston would fall in a narrow 4-3 match to Baublitz of King before falling to Palahniuk to take home sixth place. 

In the 191-pound weight class, Traeh Haynes, the fifth-ranked wrestler, would pin Melissa Jacobs of Augsburg following a first round bye. Haynes would pick up her second win of the day as she pinned Sara Lake of Lindenwood to move into the championship match against No. 1 Sydnee Kimber of McKendree. Haynes would fall to Kimber by a 10-0 technical fall to take home second place. The sixth-ranked wrestler in 191-pounds, Brittyn Corbishley, kicked off the tournament by pinning Maia Foster of Augsburg before defeating Ivana Elliott of Quincy by a 12-0 technical fall to push her into the semifinals. Corbishley would fall to No. 1 Kimber by an 11-1 technical fall but would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall win over Riley Dempewolf of Indiana Tech to put her in the third place match. Corbishley would pick up her fourth win of the day as she pinned Lake to claim third place. 

The second-ranked Cardinals are back in action on Thursday, Dec. 15 as they travel to Rock Island, Ill. to take on the Vikings of Augustana College. The first whistle is set for 6 pm inside the Carver Center.
