Lebanon, Ill. (Feb. 12, 2022) - In their final tournament before the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC), the North Central College women's wrestling team had five place winners at the Bearcat Open today at McKendree University.
In the 130-pound weight class, Amanda Martinez received a bye in the first round of the tournament before defeating Mackenzie Tayerle of Adrian University by a 10-0 technical fall. Martinez would defeat Naomi Henry of New Jersey City University by a 10-0 tech fall in the quarterfinals putting her into the semifinals against Rebekah Garcia of Lyon College. Martinez would pin Garcia and then receive a forfeit in the championship match securing first place.Â
Flora Vizi would take home fourth place in the 136 pound weight class. Vizi would receive a bye in the first round before she would defeat Michal Buska of Tiffin University by a 10-0 technical fall. Vizi would defeat Mikayla Dockweiler of Gannon University by a 12-0 technical fall before falling in the semifinals match against Emmily Patneaud of McKendree University. Vizi would bounce back and pin Arianna Carrasquillo of Tiffin University in the first 30 seconds putting her in the third place match. Vizi would fall in the third place match to Zoe Nowicki of Adrian College.Â
In the 143-pound weight class, Riley Aamold started off the tournament by pinning Sidney Ramos of Tiffin University before picking up another pin in the second round against Ashlee Vaughan of Oklahoma City University. Aamold would fall to Emma Walker of Campbellsville University in the semifinals match but would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall win over teammate Leah Bishop. Aamold would defeat Adriana Orozco of Oklahoma City University by a 10-0 technical fall before pinning Nia Miranda of Tiffin University putting her in the third place match against Emma Walker. Aamold would get her revenge and defeat Walker by a 10-0 technical fall earning third place.Â
In the 170-pound weight class, Fiona McConnell started the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Jewel Gonzalez before falling to Annabelle Helm of Gannon University in the quarterfinals. McConnell would defeat Taryn Martin of Tiffin University by a 7-5 decision before defeating Kayley Rada of Adrian by a 10-0 technical fall. McConnell would pin Leilani Martinez in the consolation semifinals putting her into the third place match against Annabelle Helm. McConnell would fall to Helm by an 11-0 technical fall earning fourth.Â
In the 191-pound weight class, Traeh Haynes received a bye in the first round before pinning Sandra Guerrero of New Jersey City University. Haynes would fall in the quarterfinals to Sydnee Kimber of McKendree University before pinning Kaycee Fitero of Lindenwood University. Haynes would pick up her third pin of the day in the consolation semifinals putting her in the third place match against Brianna Staebler of Campbellsville University. Haynes would pin Staebler for her fourth pin of the day and a third place finish.Â
The Cardinals are back in action on Feb. 20 as they travel to Stevens Point, Wis. to compete in the NCWWC Northwest Region Championships. The matches are set to begin at 10:00 am inside the Multi-Activity Center on the campus of UW-Stevens Point. Â
