KENOSHA, Wis. (Feb. 26, 2022) - Achieving five first-place showings and finishing more than 20 points ahead of its closest pursuer, the North Central College men's track and field team lifted the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Championship trophy for the 20th time in 21 tries Saturday, leaving Carthage College with the win for the fifth straight season.
The Cardinals totaled 135.50 points, while runner-up Augustana College finished with 113. Wheaton College placed third (100), followed by Carthage (94), Millikin University (81), Carroll University (63), Elmhurst University (32.50), Illinois Wesleyan University (32) and North Park University (10).
Jamauri Spivery established a new North Central record in the 55-meter dash, as his winning time of 6.36 seconds shattered the previous mark of 6.45. Spivery currently ranks 12th nationally in the 60-meter dash.
Brian Armstrong, meanwhile, won the heptathlon in his first time competing in the event. Armstrong totaled 4,403 points, nearly 300 more than his closest competition and the second-highest point total posted by a Cardinal.
Nick Janca won a narrow victory in the high jump, prevailing due to fewer missed attempts after he and Millikin's Solomon Ware each cleared 1.99 meters (6'6.25"), while
Max Svienty put on a strong finishing sprint to take first in the 3,000-meter run (8:35.47) with teammate
Jacob Kluckhohn following in third place (8:37.01). Svienty also placed second in the mile run with a personal-best time of 4:16.70.
Julian Higueros, meanwhile, stormed away from the field in the 5,000-meter run to win by more than 10 seconds in 15:04.56.
Both of the Cardinals' relay teams placed second. The distance medley relay team of
Nathan Halbrader,
AJ Lehman,
Juan Castro and
James McGlashon finished in 10:14.83 before the 4-by-400-meter relay teams closed the meet with a season-best time of 3:29.41 as Castro and Lehman teamed with
Jason Connor and
Tyler Piron.
The CCIW also announced the nine winners of its RESPECT Award for the season. RESPECT Award recipients have distinguished themselves as an integral member of the team, their institution and community by upholding the values of Responsibility, Enthusiasm, Service, Pride, Excellence, Collaboration and Trust. The RESPECT Award recognizes the intangible traits a student-athlete possesses that exemplify great character and encourages inclusiveness and a positive culture. North Central now turns its preparations to the NCAA Division III Indoor Championhips, which are scheduled to be held Mar. 11-12 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
