Mar. 7, 2022 - Lowering his previous personal best twice on the final day of qualifying, North Central College sprinter
Jamauri Spivery will get a chance to race against the nation's best, locking up a spot in the 60-meter dash in this weekend's NCAA Division III Indoor Championships with yet another school-record effort.
Having already lowered his previous North Central record from 6.99 to 6.87 seconds earlier in the season, Spivery lowered the record to 6.86 in the preliminary heats of Saturday's Ripon College NCAA Qualifier, then proceeded to win the final in 6.84 seconds to outdistance second-place finisher Robert Ogbuli of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (6.90).
Spivery ranks 16th-fastest among all Division III competitors in the dash, earning him a spot in the field for this weekend's national finals. The anchor for North Central's ninth-place 4-by-100-meter relay team at the 2021 outdoor national championships, Spivery is preparing for his first indoor national meet.
The Cardinals also sent a contingent to Kenosha, Wisconsin to take part in the Carthage College Firebird Finale.
Nick Janca and
Brian Armstrong placed first (1.90 meters, six feet, 2.75 inches) and fourth (1.85m, 6'0.75"), respectively, while
Riley Hughes placed seventh in the shot put (14.22m, 46'8") and
Anthony Zajac took eighth in the 35-pound weight throw (14.03m, 46'0.50").
This year's indoor championships will be held Friday and Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
