CORALVILLE, Iowa (May 24, 2022) - The North Central College women's wrestling program sent four women to the World Team Trials this weekend where
Yelena Makoyed and
Amanda Martinez secured a spot at Final X during the first week in June.Â
Sydney Petzinger represented the Cardinal Wrestling Club (CWC) at 50 kg and her first match would be against Emily Shilson, the defending 109-pound NCWWC National Champion. Petzinger would fall by a 10-0 technical fall before pinning Natalie Reyna-Rodriguez in the consolation round of eight. Petzinger would face-off against Nina Pham in the second consolation round of eight and would fall, ending her tournament.Â
Niya Teresita Gaines was the No. 5 seed at 59 kg and took on Lexie Basham in the first round of the tournament. Gaines would fall by a 12-8 decision, putting her into the consolation side of the bracket. Gaines would face Hailey Corona in the consolation round of four and would fall to Corona, ending her tournament.Â
Amanda Martinez was the No. 3 seed at 57 kg and took on Elvie Villa in the first round, she would defeat Villa by a 10-0 technical fall pushing her into the semifinals against Alexandra Hedrick. Martinez fell to Hedrick by a 6-4 decision, putting her into the consolation semifinals against Tateum Park. Martinez would bounce back and defeat Park by a 10-0 technical fall before defeating Ngao Shoua Whitethorn by an 11-6 decision in the third place match. Martinez will wrestle Cameron Guerin in a true third place match at Final X New York on June 8 at Madison Square Garden for a spot on the USA National Team.Â
Yelena Makoyed was the No. 3 seed at 76 kg and after receiving a bye in the first round, Makoyed would defeat Jordan Nelson by an 11-0 technical fall to push her into the semifinals against Olivia Robinson. Makoyed would waste no time and defeated Robinson by a 10-0 technical fall in the first period to send her to Final X Stillwater. Makoyed will wrestle No. 1 seed Dymond Guilford in a best of three series for a sport on the USA National team on June 3 at Gallagher-Iba Arena on the campus of Oklahoma State University.Â
