ROME, Italy (June 23, 2022) - North Central College women's wrestler
Yelena Makoyed shined in her senior-level international debut as she took home the gold medal at the Matteo Pellicone ranking event in Italy this afternoon.Â
Makoyed would face off against the 2018 World Bronze Medalist, Martina Kuenz of Austria in the first round and would defeat Kuenz by a 10-2 decision pushing her into the second round against three-time world medalist Epp Mae of Estonia. Mae would jump out to an early 3-0 early lead in the first period but Makoyed would score two takedowns to head into the second period up 4-3. Mae would go up 7-3 and with just 30 seconds remaining Makoyed would cut the lead to one but with time expiring, Makoyed would circle around Mae securing the takedown and a 8-7 win.Â
Makoyed would move on to the third round where she would face off against Francy Raedelt of Germany. Makoyed would pin Raedelt to secure her spot in the semifinals against Catalina Axente of Romania. Makoyed would pick up her second pin of the event pushing her into the Gold Medal round against Aastasiya Alpyeyeva of Ukraine. Makoyed would defeat Alpyeyeva by a 10-0 technical fall to claim gold.Â
Makoyed has an impressive resume as she is a two-time National Champion, three-time All-American, 2021 Pan-Am Gold Medalist, and now a Gold Medalist at the Senior level.Â
