KENOSHA, Wis. (Sept. 11, 2022) - Taking the court for the first time this season, the North Central College men's tennis team competed in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Fall Tournament. The two-day event was shortened to one day due to predicted rainfall on Sunday.
Playing as individuals, the Cardinals posted an event record of 24-6 over the seven singles flights and four doubles flights.
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Javier Suarez Balsera rolled to opening round wins in the first flight with Vilarroig Martinez advancing to the championship match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Clayton Maack of Millikin. Daniel Estanislao won his first two matches in the second flight while Matthew Sengphommachanh won his first round match before falling in the semifinals.
Flight three saw Colten Way advance to the championship match with Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez bouncing back after an opening round loss with a win in the consolation bracket. In the fourth flight, both Wyatt Crowell and Brayden Kopp won their first two matches to face off in the championship before the event came to an end.
Matt Crossland won his first career match over Rodrigo Laux of Millikin before falling in the semifinals in the fifth flight. Daniel Urraca Mozos secured a 6-0, 6-0 win in the first round of the sixth flight.
The tandem of Vilarroig Martinez and Gonzalez Fernandez won their first two matches to advance to the championship match while Suarez Balsera and Crowell won their first match before falling to Carthage's No. 1 duo.
The second doubles flight featured Estanislao and Sengphommachanhmove in the championship match on the top half of the bracket with Way/Kopp also winning their first two matches in the bottom half. Crossland/Uracca Mozos cruised to an opening round win before advancing into the championship with a win over Carthage.
Next Sunday, North Central heads back to Carthage to compete in the Battle of the Birds. The event begins at 9 a.m. at Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha.
