KENOSHA, Wis. (Sept. 17, 2022) - Playing in the second annual Battle of the Birds, the North Central College men's tennis team earned three second-place finishes on Saturday at Smeds Tennis Center.

Flight one saw Ramon Vilarroig Martinez pair up with Wyatt Crowell to defeat their Illinois Institute of Technology opponent 8-4 in doubles play. In singles action, Vilarroig Martinez secured an 8-1 win while Crowell won 8-4. The final round of the first flight was won by UW-Whitewater who won all three matches as the Cardinals recorded a second-place finish.

The second flight featured Javier Suarez Balsera and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez who after falling to their UW-Whitewater opponents in the opening round, took down Landon Sather and Josh Klement in singles play to take third place.

Matthew Sengphommachanh and Colten Way earned a narrow 8-4 victory in third flight doubles before Way clinched the win by taking down Huy Ngo (IIT) 8-4. Again, the Warhawks swept the championship round, placing North Central second in flight three.

The Cardinals returned the favor by sweeping UW-Whitewater in the first round of flight four. Daniel Estanislao and Matt Crossland won 8-5 as a tandem before each winning their singles matches. Despite Estanislao's 8-4 win in the championship round, Carthage secured a first-place finish in the fourth flight.

North Central secured its third first-round sweep as Brayden Kopp and Daniel Urraca Mozos won all three of their matches against IIT. Kopp earned an 8-4 win at A singles in the fifth flight, but UW-Whitewater won two of the three matches to win flight five. The final flight saw Douglas Blomquist defeat Calery Fauret 8-2 in the opening round. Dieter Gonzales and Blomquist secured third place by sweeping the Concordia University Wisconsin team.

A select number of Cardinals will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, on Friday to begin the three-day event.
