Cardinals Dip To No. 2 In The NWCA Rankings

Nov. 16, 2023 - The North Central College women's wrestling team falls to No. 2 in National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) newest installment of their Team Rankings.  
 
University of Iowa grasps first place in the polls with 114 points and bumps North Central down to No. 2 (110 points). North Central is followed by King University at No. 3 (89 points) and Colorado Mesa University at No. 4 (56 points). Meanwhile, Sacred Heart University and McKendree University sit tied with 32 points at No. 5. The only other College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) member included is Aurora University. Aurora is currently tied with East Stroudsburg at No. 10 (16 points).  
 
Maddie Avila is currently ranked third in the 101-pound weight class. Avila is ranked third after posting an 11-1 record this season and finished first at the Pointer Open. Last weekend, Avila finished the Adrian Open in second place, going 3-1 on the day.  
 
In the 109-pound weight class, Kendra Ryan has moved up to the No. 1 spot, while Angelina Graff moves into the polls at No. 8. Ryan has tallied 10 technical falls, a pin, and one decision win so far this season. She won the CCIW Wrestler of the Week Award Tuesday, Nov. 14, after placing first at the Adrian Open. Graff picked up two wins at the Adrian Duals while only falling to Makayla Young (Indiana Tech). With an overall record of 9-3, Graff has picked up three wins, three technical falls, and three wins by decision. Earlier in the season Graff finished in third at the Pointer Open.  
 
Sydney Petzinger dropped one spot to No. 2 in the 116-pound weight class. She posted an 11-0 record this season with a first-place finish at the Adrian Open and a first-place finish at the Pointer Open.  
 
In the 123-pound weight class, Amani Jones holds steady at No. 1, while Asia Nguyen-Smith is ranked at No. 7. Jones finished first in the Pointer Open, picking up three pins and a technical fall for an overall record of 4-0. Tuesday night, Jones defeated Carthage's Karla Topete with a pin in 41 seconds. Last weekend, Nguyen-Smith finished the Adrian Open in first place and finished third in the Pointer Open. She is 11-1 on the season, including four pins and five technical falls already on the season.  
 
Salome Walker has entered the rankings at No. 5 followed by teammate Sara Sterner. Walker finished first at the Adrian Open after defeating No. 8 Nicole Moore (McKendree). She also finished the Pointer Open in third place. Walker is 11-2 on the season, tallying four pins, three technical falls, and four wins by decision. Sterner has seen equal success this season after finishing last weekend at the Adrian Open in third place as well as finishing the Pointer Open in second place, only falling to No. 1 Alexis Janiak of Aurora in the finals. With an overall record of 10-2 on the season, Sterner has already tallied seven pins.  
 
2023 National Champion Yele Aycock hangs onto first place in the 136-pound weight class and freshman Taylor Graveman comes in at No. 6. Aycock has placed first at both the Pointer Open and the Adrian Open. She currently has a record of 10-0. Graveman is 9-2 on the season with four pins and five technical falls. She entered the rankings after finishing the Adrian Open in second behind Aycock and third at the Pointer Open.  
 
In the 143-pound weight class, Kendall Bostelman has fallen one spot to No. 5. Bostelman took down teammate Niya Teresita Gaines to earn third place at the Adrian Open. She has tallied seven wins by decision, along with two pins and one technical fall, for an overall record of 10-3.  
 
In the 155-pound weight class, London Houston has fallen to No. 4 and Tiera Jimerson enters the rankings at No. 7. Houston is 6-0 on the season and finished first at the Pointer Open. Jimerson took home third place at the Pointer Open and took home second at the Adrian Open. She is 11-2 on the season, picking up five technical falls, three pins, and one win by decision.  
 
Fiona McConnell enters the ranking in this installment at No. 10 in the 170-pound weight class. She is currently 2-1 on the season with one pin and one decision. At the Pointer Open, McConnel took down Abigail Swanson (Northern Michigan University) and Mackenzie Konanz (Aurora University) before falling to No. 6 Jade Herzer of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  
 
In the 191-pound weight class, Brittyn Corbishley moves up to No. 1, while Caroline Ward enters at No. 10. Corbishley finished the Pointers Open and the Adrian Open in first place. She is 10-0 on the season with six pins, two technical falls, and two wins by decision. Ward entered the rankings after finishing third at the Adrian Open, falling only to Corbishley. She finished third at the Pointer Open after only falling to teammate Tatum Heikkila. Ward has an overall record of 10-2 this season, tallying two pins, two technical falls, and four wins by decision.  
 
The Cardinals will send Jaslynn Gallegos and Yele Aycock to the NWCA All-Star Classic next Tuesday, Nov. 21, in University Park, Penn. The rest of the Cardinals will compete at home Wednesday, Nov. 22, when North Central takes on Augustana College at 5 pm inside Gregory Arena.
