Dec. 12, 2023 - The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Week has been awarded to North Central College women's wrestler and No. 1-ranked wrestler in the 123-pound weight class,
Amani Jones. This is the second time in her career she has been honored with this distinction.
The junior has a spotless record of 9-0 this season, including a 5-0 record at the North Central College Invitational (
Dec. 11). At the Invitational, Jones started the day off hot and took her momentum throughout the day. In the first round, she pinned Kivah Caballero of the University of Providence in 21 seconds. In the next round, Jones took down Carthage College's Karla Topete with a pin in 50 seconds. Then, she defeated Isabelle Silva (Indiana Tech) with a 10-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, Jones earned her third pin of the day against University of Iowa's Cali Leng in two minutes and 35 seconds. In the championship match, Jones took down Iowa's Ava Rose with a 10-0 technical fall to collect first place.
Last season, Jones added a lot to her resume including CCIW Wrestler of the Week (
Dec. 6), the 123-pound
CCIW Champion, 123-pound
Region IV champion, the 123-pound
National runner up, All-American Honors, a spot on the
U-20 World National Team, and a bronze medal at the
U-20 World Championship for Team USA.
As a freshman, Jones set a new program record for overall season record of 35-8. She also placed
fifth in the National Tournament and earned All-American Honors.
Jones and the rest of the North Central women's wrestling team take part in the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Dec. 30, at the NOW Arena on the campus of Northwestern University. Matches begin at 9:30 a.m.
