Dec 9, 2023 - The North Central College men's wrestling team hosted the 59th Annual North Central College Invitational. The team placed second overall, scoring 148.5 points.
Ethan Spacht and No. 2 ranked Christian Guzman both took second in the 125-weight class as they elected to not face off against each other in the finals. On route to getting there, Spacht won two of his matches through fall over and his third match ended in a decision as scored 18 points on the day. Guzman scored 17 points overall and won all his matches through major decisions.
No. 14 ranked Bradley Rosen won the 141-weight division scoring 20 points along the way. In the semifinal match against Dresden Grimm (Coe), Rosen won through a 16-1 technical fall. The championship match Rosen won in a 11-3 major decision over Sam Lorenz (Wisconsin-La Crosse).
Kenny Siwicki in the 149-weight division got fourth overall. He started his day off with two wins through fall overs along with his next two wins being through decisions.
No.3 ranked Javen Estrada not only won the 157-weight division, but he also won Most Outstanding Wrestler for the invitational. Estrada scored 23.5 points on the day. In the quarterfinals Estrada won the match in lightning quick fashion through a fall at 1:08. Estrada won the semifinal and the final through a technical fall, including in the final a 19-0 technical fall.
Alex Villar placed second in the 165-weight class as he scored 18 points in doing so. Villar won his first two matches through fall over. In his semifinal match he won through a 10-5 decision over Andrew Supers (Baldwin Wallace).
Payton Geigner finished third overall in the 184-weight class and scored 15.5 points on his way to it. Geigner on his way to the third-place match won through fall against Kyus Root (Aurora University). Geigner won the third-place match with a 6-0 decision.
No. 12 ranked Robby Bates in the 285-weight class claimed third place and scored 17.5 points as well. Bates won through an 18-1 technical fall over Wyatt Smith (Coe). In the third-place match Bates narrowly escapes with the win in a 4-3 decision over Christopher Krum (Albion).
Finishing ahead of the Cardinals is No. 1 ranked Ausburg University with 180 points and in third place is Coe College with 138 points. The Cardinals in the invitational finished ahead of their current No. 9 ranking such as No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 6 Baldwin and Wallace.
The Cardinals will take a small break before they take to the mat again in the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec. 29 and 30.
