BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Feb. 25, 2023) - The North Central College men's track and field team achieved its sixth-straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Championship title on Saturday as the Cardinals finished 47 points ahead of runner-up and host school, Illinois Wesleyan University.
The 149-point win marks the Cardinals' 21st indoor title across 22 attempts, this time with a 47-point margin ahead of Illinois Wesleyan's 102 points. Carthage College finished in third with 89 points followed by Millikin University (83.50), Carroll University (64), Augustana College (60), North Park University (48.50), Wheaton College (48), and Elmhurst University (19).
The Cardinals scored all five student-athletes in the 5,000-meter run and swept the top-four spots with Drew Guimond leading the charge with a personal best effort of 14 minutes, and 38.33 seconds. Thomas Rohr finished second in 14:59.46, while Kyle Nofziger (15:05.79) and Luke Hoffmann (15:07.40) each turned in their personal best efforts to finish third and fourth, respectively. Jonathan Olenek rounded out the Cardinal scorers in the event in seventh (15:16.64).
Max Svienty's first-place finish in the 3,000-meter run set a new Shirk Center facility record in a time of eight minutes, and 16.12 seconds while teammates Connor Riss (8:20.51) and Braden Nicholson (8:23.25) finished second and third in the event. Riss teamed up with Julian Higueros, Owen Dare, and Lucas Hoffman to turn in a first-place finish in the distance-medley relay with a time of 10:14.79. Hoffman later turned in a second-place effort in the 800-meter run (1:55.46).
Logan Tanttu finished third in the 800-meter run (1:57.03) after surpassing the facility record in the mile where he clocked a 4:14.53 run to finish second. Within the sprints group, Jamauri Spivery's time of 6.95 seconds was good for second in the 60-meter dash while Charley Smith's 22.57-second run in the 200-meter dash earned him a third-place finish. Also finishing third was Riley Hughes in the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 10.50 inches (15.20 meters).
North Central shifts its focus toward preparations for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, which are scheduled to be held March 10-11 in Birmingham, Alabama. The Cardinals will look to better their efforts at the Carthage and Wartburg final qualifiers on March 3-4.
