Mar. 22, 2023 - Abigail Penados of the North Central College women's tennis team captured her first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Women's Tennis Player of the Week award after posting a 3-0 record on the annual spring break trip to Florida.

Penados, ranked 20th in the region, won against Sydney Cianciola who is currently ranked 13th in the region and 49th in the country. Penados overcame a 0-6 loss in the first set to win the match 0-6, 6-3, 12-10. 

Following the win over Denison, Penados continued her winning streak over to her matches against Macalester College. In doubles action, she teamed up with Natalie Bassett for a commanding 8-1 win. Penados picked up her final win of the trip with a win in singles, defeating Sydney Ellison 6-1, 6-2. 

On the year, Penados is 17-1, playing matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. She improved to 18-1 in doubles play. Penados joins Bassett and Kensington Payne as Cardinals who earned CCIW Player of the Week honors in the 2022-2023 season. 

The Cardinals will travel to Chicago to take on the top-ranked University of Chicago on March 24th. The match play is set to start at 7 p.m.
