Apr. 12, 2023 - North Central College women's track and field hurdler,
Julia Babinec has been named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Track Athlete of the Week after turning in two first-place finishes at the First Chance Invitational on Friday. The CCIW announced its selections on Wednesday.
North Central finished second in the meet with 132.83 points while claiming six first-place finishes. Babinec won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.15 seconds before crossing the finish line first in her debut 400-meter hurdle race (1:07.83). Babinec was also a part of the runner-up 4-by-100 meter relay quartet with Marcedes Jackson, Denise Partee, and Lindsey Novak that turned in a time of 47.78 seconds. The time currently ranks eighth in the program's history.
Babinec's 100-meter hurdle time ranks seventh in Division III while the relay sits ninth. Babinec ranks first in the CCIW for both the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, and the relay is good for second in the conference.
The Cardinals are the highest-ranking CCIW member institution in the Midwest Region coming in at No. 6. Washington (Mo.), the University of Chicago, and Wartburg head the top three spots in the Midwest rankings.
North Central will send the majority of its squad to Wheaton College on Saturday, April 15 while a small group travels to California for meets at Cal State-Los Angeles, Azusa Pacific, and Long Beach State Thursday through Saturday.
