Men's Track Wins Seven Events at Wheaton & Augustana

Apr. 23, 2023 - The No. 16 North Central College men's track and field team turned in seven first place finishes between the Augustana College Meet of Champions on Friday and the Wheaton College Don Church Invitational on Saturday. 

The Cardinals swept the top four places of the 3,000-meter run at the Don Church Invitational as Max Svienty led the way with a eight minute, 39.87 second first place run. Kyle Nofziger finished second in nine minutes, 5.32 seconds, while Jonathan Olenek (9:08.08) and Nathan Brischetto (9:32.06) finished third and fourth, respectively. 

Svienty turned in a first place finish in the 1,500-meter run in a time of four minutes, and two seconds. Drew Guimond clocked a four minute, 5.32 second run to finish third. Jamauri Spivery posted the fastest time in the 100-meter dash (10.83) after teaming up with Matt Lewis, Jahron Williams, and Prentice Myles for a first place nod in the 4-by-100 meter relay (42.12).

Anthony Divenere claimed the Cardinals final first-place finish at the Don Church Invitational with his pole vault clearance of 14 feet, 7.25 inches (4.45 meters). His effort is a new personal best and ranks fourth in the conference. 

Riley Hughes turned in a second place finish in the discus throw with his 148 foot, seven inch toss to rank fourth in the conference. He also finished third in the shot put with a mark of 46 feet, nine inches. Anthony Zajac notched a new personal best in the hammer throw of 164 feet, 11 inches (50.28m) to place third at Wheaton. Zajac moves up to sixth in the program's history while ranking seventh in the conference. Nathan Halbrader's nine minute, 53.92 second run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was good for a third-place finish and ranks amongst the conference's top five. 

Down in Rock Island, Connor Riss claimed a first-place finish in the 1,500-meter run in a time of three minutes, 56.09 seconds while teammate Logan Tanttu was not far behind in third at three minutes, 58.15 seconds. Luke Hoffmann picks up his first 3,000-meter steeplechase win this season in nine minutes, 30.83 seconds. 

North Central totaled 139 points at the Don Church Invitational to finish third behind Carthage College's 176 points and Wheaton's 152 points. The Cardinals squad at Augustana's Meet of Champions put up 34 points to finish tenth out of 25 teams as Loras won with 137.50 points followed by UW-Platteville's 97.50 points. 

The Cardinals are back in action on April 27 for the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa with the majority of the squad competing at the Elmhurst Invite. Throwing events for the Elmhurst Invite will be contested at North Central College on Thursday, April 27 while the rest of the meet will take place at Wheaton College on Friday, April 28.
