Apr. 8, 2023 - In its first home meet of the outdoor season, the North Central College men's track and field team battled dropping temperatures on their way to a second-place finish in the loaded 12-team field at Jay and Dot Buikema Track inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on Friday.
The Cardinals claimed two event wins on the day with AJ Lehman taking the 400-meter victory in 50.69 seconds and Connor Riss crossing first the 1,500-meter run in a time of three minutes, 54.59 seconds. North Central swept the top three spots of the 1,500-meter run with Julian Higueros just behind Riss with a new personal best to finish second (3:55.07) and Logan Tanttu took third (3:56.57). Riss later turned in a third-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:57.82).
The 4-by-100-meter relay team of Jahron Williams, Lehman, Prentice Myles, and Jamauri Spivery clocked a 42.78-second run to finish second overall. Spivery also turned in a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 10.88 seconds. Luke Hoffmann finished as the runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a 31-second personal best effort of 9:26.79.
Anthony Divenere turned in an outdoor personal best effort of 13 feet, 11.25 (4.25 meters) to finish second while teammate Joel Jaquinde finished third (13'5.25, 4.10m). Also turning in third-place finishes was Yasmani Rojas in the javelin (157'5, 47.99m) and Anthony Zajac in the hammer throw (159'7, 48.65m). Zajac's mark is good for seventh in the program's history.
The University of Chicago won the meet as a team with a point total of 172, while the North Central finished second with 159 points, and Lewis was third with 106.50 points.
The Cardinals have a busy weekend ahead with a small group heading to California for the Cal State LA Twilight Open on Thursday, April 13, and the Long Beach Invitational on Saturday, April 15. A larger group will remain in the Midwest for the UW-Platteville Invitational on Friday, April 14, and the Wheaton College Invitational on Saturday, April 15.
