Men's Track Claims Fifth-Straight Outdoor CCIW Title

WAUKESHA, Wis. (May 7, 2023) - The North Central College men's track and field team clinched its fifth-straight outdoor College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) championship title on Saturday after turning in 152.50 points with five individual champions.

Friday night's 10,000-meter run was a major turning point for North Central as the Cardinals notched the top four places in the event for 29 points.  Max Svienty led the charge with his winning time of 31 minutes 7.63 seconds with Drew Guimond crossing the finish line alongside him in 31 minutes, 7.72 seconds. Jonathan Olenek took third (31:34.76) with Ishaan Patel finishing fourth (31:45.43). 

Logan Tanttu turned in a personal best effort of one minute, 51.01 seconds to win the 800-meter run. Tanttu moves in the program's top 10 list at No. 6 while also ranking 21st nationally in the event. Connor Riss was the 1,500-meter run champion on Saturday with his winning time of three minutes, 52.75 seconds.

Jamauri Spivery had the fastest time in the 100-meter dash preliminary round (10.75 seconds) before bettering that time in Saturday's final to claim the event win in 10.65 seconds. Braden Nicholson took first in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 14 minutes, 30.88 seconds while teammate Julian Higueros was just behind in second in 14 minutes, 37.80 seconds. 

Luke Hoffmann was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase clocking a time of nine minutes, 27.78 seconds while Nathan Halbrader finished third in nine minutes, 28.93 seconds. Also turning in a top-three performance at the conference championships was Riley Hughes in the shot put as his toss of 50 feet, 9.25 inches was good for third. 

North Central turned in 152.50 points to take the team crown while Millikin University's 135.50 points was good for a runner-up finish and Carthage College finished third with 99 points. 

The CCIW also announced the nine winners of its RESPECT Award for the season. RESPECT Award recipients have distinguished themselves as an integral member of the team, their institution, and their community by upholding the values of Responsibility, Enthusiasm, Service, Pride, Excellence, Collaboration, and Trust. The RESPECT Award recognizes the intangible traits a student-athlete possesses that exemplify great character and encourages inclusiveness and a positive culture. North Central's RESPECT Award honoree is senior, Dylan Combs.

The Cardinals look ahead to hosting the Carius-Gregory Invitational on Thursday, May 11 and Friday, May 12 at the Jay & Dot Buikema Track.
