PLAINFIELD, Ill. (Sept. 10, 2023) - Hosting the annual College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Fall Invite, the North Central College men's tennis team finished in third place or better in 10 of the 12 flights, including three first-place finishes.
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez claimed first-place at the No. 1 singles flight with three wins in straight sets. Matthew Sengphommachanh captured third place in the flight with a win over reigning CCIW Player of the Year Arthur Hermange in the third-place match.
In his first action for North Central, Justin Penados overcame a loss in the No. 2 singles first round to take fifth-place in a match that went the distance against Ferruzzi from Carthage, 6-3, 0-6, 10-4. In the third flight, Henry Ros opened his collegiate career with a 5-7, 6-1, 10-5 win on his way to a third-place finish. Daniel Estanislao took fourth place at No. 3.
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and Wyatt Crowell represented North Central in the fourth flight as Gonzalez Fernandez secured second-place while Crowell claimed third-place with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Carthage. Ned Curley and Matthew Crossland found themselves squaring off in the third-place match as they each won their opening round match before falling in the semifinals. Curley won 6-2, 6-1 to claim third-place.
David Vilarroig Martinez swept his first collegiate match in the No. 7 flight before securing first-place with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Augustana's Jung. Milan Miskovic finished in third-place with a three-set thriller to win the third-place match. Flight No. 8 was a round robin as Brian Gambuzza ran the table by defeating all three of his counterparts.
In doubles action, Crowell/Sengphommachanh took third-place at No. 1 doubles while Estanislao and Rafael Lessa claimed first-place at No. 2 with back-to-back 8-6 victories. Penados/Curley rebounded after a first round loss to take fifth-place at No. 2.
The Cardinals compete in the Battle of the Birds next Sunday as they take on the host Carthage, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Concordia University Wisconsin. That event is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis.
