KENOSHA, WIS. (Jan. 28, 2024) - The North Central College women's wrestling team earned their second straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championship after sweeping first place in all ten weight classes.
 
The Cardinals had a total of 14 individuals who earned All-CCIW accolades for their performance at the conference tournament. North Central's Head Coach, Joe Norton, was honored as the Coach of the Year. Amani Jones was named as the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete at the tournament. Off the mat, Sara Sterner and Halle White received the Elite 26 award. While Shelby Ottum earned the RESPECT Award.
 
In the 101-pound weight class, Maddie Avila (No. 4) only needed one minute and 45 seconds to pin Aurora's Ixzayana Cruz. Avila went on to defeat Genesis Ramirez (Aurora) by a 2-2 decision and take home first place.
 
Kendra Ryan (No. 1) represented the Cardinals in the 109 class. Ryan defeated Camila Neuman (Aurora) with a 10-0 technical fall before taking down Mia Moore (Aurora) with a 10-0 technical fall. Ryan earned first place after defeating Carthage's Natalie Majer.
 
Two Cardinals wrestled at the 116-pound weight class, Amaya Yoshizumi and Sydney Petzinger (No. 2). Both received a bye in the first round. In the semifinals, Yoshuzumi only needed 44 seconds to defeat Aurora's Sharon Moreno with a pin. While Petzinger took down Lakeland University's Mikayla Rieck with a technical fall (10-0). The two Cardinals met in the championship match. After a hard-fought battle, Petzinger took down Yoshizumi with a 10-0 technical fall.
 
Amani Jones (No. 2) wrestled in the 123-pound weight class. Jones defeated Hannah Suboni-Kaufman (Augustana) with a 10-0 technical fall before defeating Sandie Pfeil (Augustana) with a technical fall (11-0). Jones earned first place and her third technical fall of the day by beating Aurora's Bethany Regione 10-0.
 
The 130-pound weight class was another class with two North Central wrestlers. Sara Sterner and Salome Walker (No.6) both started the afternoon off with byes. The semifinals featured Sterened defeating Moni Griffin (Augustana) with a 10-0 technical fall. Meanwhile, Walker defeated Carthage's Nadia Flores with a technical fall (2-0). In a nail-biting finish, Walker won the championship match with a 2-0 decision over Sterener.
 
Halle White and Yele Aycock (No. 1) took on the 136 class. Both Cardinals received byes in the first round. White picked up a 10-0 technical fall in the semifinals over Lilian Hernandz (Aurora). Aycock only needed two minutes and four seconds to pin Augustana's Kara Rohlf. In the first-place match, Aycock earned her second pin of the day after pinning White in one minute and 57 seconds.
 
Alara Boyd (No. 1) wrestled in the 143 class. Boyd defeated Augustana's Lanie Cecala with a 10-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, Boyd only needed 36 seconds to pin Aurora's Olga Turiy. Boyd took home first-place by defeating Aine Moffit (Augustana) with a technical fall (10-0).
 
In the 155-pound weight class, Shelby Ottum fell to Aurora's Antonia Phillips by a 7-2 decision before pinning Basil Kiracofe (Carthage) in 55 seconds. Then Ottum pinned Carthage's Adele Senzig in five minutes and 12 seconds. In the third-place match, Ottum fell to Lakeland's Niyasia McCampbell in a nail biting 4-1 decision. Ottum received fourth-place.
 
Also, in the 155 class was No. 3 London Houston. Houston picked up a first-round win after an injury default from her opponent. In the semifinals, Houston spent very little time on the mat by pinning Adele Senzig (Carthage) in 21 seconds. Houston earned first-place after defeating Aurora's Antonia Phillips.
 
Larissa Gallo and Sadie Hill competed for North Central in the 170 class. Gallo received a bye in the first round before walking out and pinning Francelle Williams (Lakeland) in 15 seconds. Gallo brought the momentum into the championship match and pinned Sawyer Graham (Augustana) in one minute and 49 seconds.
 
Hill was given a win in the quarterfinals after an injury default from her opponent but fell in the semifinals to Sawyer Graham (Augustana) by a decision (7-1). Hill had a bye in the consolation semifinals before earning third place with a 12-2 technical fall over Lakeland's Francelle Williams.
 
Traeh Haynes was the lone Cardinal in the 191-pound weight class. Haynes only needed one minute and seven seconds before pinning Lakeland's Khalila Corry. In round two, Haynes defeated Angie Guy with a 10-0 technical fall. Haynes earned first-place by pinning Sydney Manos (Aurora) in 47 seconds.
 
North Central is back on the mat Feb. 2 and Feb. 3 at the Women's D3 Invite hosted by Augustana College in East Moline, Ill.
