Feb. 13, 2024 - A member of the North Central College men's volleyball team, Danny Smithers, was the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Defensive Player of the Week recipient, announced Monday afternoon.
 
The junior libero set new program and career records for digs per set in a four-set match with 22 digs against Milwaukee School of Engineering last Thursday (Feb. 8). Smithers led the Cardinals back court with zero reception errors and held a 2.4 passer rating.
 
Smithers dominated the CCIW in digs per set last week, averaging 5.5 digs. The next closest was Illinois Wesleyan University's Jace Milka, who averaged 3 digs per set.
 
This is Smithers first CCIW Player of the Week award after transferring to North Central from Concordia University-Irvine. Tyler Donovan is the only other Cardinal to be selected for the accolade this season, receiving the award Jan. 22 and Jan. 29.
 
North Central travels to Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, to take part in the Yellow Jacket Invitational. The Cardinals are set to face Balwin Wallace at 8 pm (EST) Thursday, Feb. 15. To view the Cardinals weekend schedule, click HERE.
