North Central First Among 23 Teams

QUAD CITIES, ILL. (Feb. 5, 2024) - The North Central College women's wrestling team competed in the first Quad City D3 National Invite last weekend. The Cardinals took first place among 23 teams with the help of five individuals placing first in their respective weight classes. 
 
North Central placed first with 232.5 points. The next closest team was Stevens Point University in second place with 182 points. In third was Schreiner University with 113.5 points, followed by Simpson University (106 points). Augsburg University closes out the top five (94.5 points). 
 
In the 116-pound weight class, Janessa George received a bye to start the day before defeating Alma's Chloe Colton with a technical fall (10-0). Then, George pinned Carleigh Czerneski (Adrian) in five minutes. The semifinals featured George pinning Jaia Ashley (Schreiner) in two minutes and 59 seconds. George took first place by picking up her third pin of the day, this time over Abby Nelson of Stevens Point in only 59 seconds. 
 
Asia Nguyen-Smith wrestled for the Cardinals in the 123 class. Nguyen-Smith only needed 18 seconds to pin Elizabeth Tapia Banuelos (Buena Vista). Nguyen-Smith beat Brianna Derouin (Stevens Point) with a 10-0 technical fall before picking up a win over Southern Virginia's Abby Pilkington due to an injury. In the semifinals, Nguyen-Smith pinned Sandie Pfeil in 53 seconds before defeating Ashley Cannon (Simpson) with a 10-0 technical fall in the championship match. 
 
Sydney Park started her day off strong with a pin over Mattie Papenthien (Dubuque) in one minute and 53 seconds in the 136 class. Park defeated Augustana's Kara Rohlf with a 10-0 technical fall prior to defeating Broooke Schuenemann (Stevens Point) with a 12-0 technical fall. Park met teammate Alondra Morales on the mat in the championship match. In a hard-fought battle, Parl fell to Morales by a 6-2 decision. 
 
Also, in the 136-pound weight class was North Central wrestler Alondra Morales. Morales took down Brooke Wieczorek (Schreiner) with a 10-0 technical fall. Morales only needed one minute and six seconds to pin Shania Graybill (Buena Vista) before defeating Eureka's Kiza Williams with a technical fall (11-0). In the championship match, Morales took on teammate Sydney Park and earned first place by defeating Park with a 6-2 decision. 
 
In the 155-pound weight class, Kendall Bostelman defeated Central's Esther Hughes with a 11-0 technical fall before defeating Rylee Rodish (Buena Vista) with a 10-0 technical fall. In the quarterfinal, Bostelman took down April Archibeque (Simpson) with a 10-0 technical fall. Bostelman pinned Eureka's Mckenzie Cook in two minutes and 18 seconds. In the championship match, Bostelman defeated Aniyah Kelly (Wartburg) with a 14-4 technical fall to earn first place. 
 
Larissa Gallo started her day off in the 170 class with a win as a result of an injury default from her opponent. Ready to get on the mat, Gallo needed just 59 seconds to pin Cornell's Emma Stevenson. Taking her momentum into the next round, Gallo pinned Kami Senlycki (Wartburg) in one minute and 58 seconds. Gallo fell to Jade Herzer (Stevens Point) in the finals, finishing the day in second place. 
 
In the 191-pound weight class, Caroline Ward picked up a win due to an injury default before defeating Magalie Mogiga (Buena Vista) with a 12-1 technical fall. In the semifinals, Ward won a nail-biting match against Augsburg's Melissa Jacobs (Dec 2-0). In the championship match, Ward fell to Rewa Chababo (University of the Ozarks) by a 5-0 decision. Ward finished the Invite in second place. 
 
North Central's Dasia Yearby dominated the 235 class. Yearby first defeated Central's Selena Snell with a 10-0 technical fall before pinning Kate Riege (Stevens Point) in two minutes and 32 seconds. Yearby brought her momentum into the next match by pinning Asia Young (Central) in 28 seconds. Yearby finished the weekend in first place by picking up her third and fastest pin of the weekend over Bralyyn Wagler (Cornell) in only 11 seconds. 
 
North Central (No. 1) will go head-to-head against No. 6 Aurora University at 6 pm Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Thornton Gymnasium.
