KENOSHA, Wis. (Sept. 8, 2024) - In their first action of the season, the North Central College men's tennis team won four of the 11 flights at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Fall Invitational this past weekend at Smeds Tennis Center.
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Matthew Sengphommachanh competed in Flight No. 1. Vilarroig Martinez won his first two matches before beating Gomez of Carroll University 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match. Sengphommachanh dropped his opening match but rattled off two straight wins to claim fifth place.
Rafael Lessa and Ignacio Hernandez Ruiz won their opening round matches to secure a top-four finish in the second singles flight. Lessa earned a 7-6 (10), 6-3 win over Hernandez Ruiz in the third-place match.
In Flight No. 3, Justin Penados and Henry Ros each won the first-round match. Penados beat Kordesh (Millikin University) 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the finals where he fell 6-3, 7-5 to Carthage. Ros claimed a third-place finish with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kordesh.
Rafael Miquel Isern and Matt Crossland fell in their first matches of the fourth singles flight. Both moved into the fifth-place match with wins in the back draw. Crossland picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Miquel Isern to claim fifth place.
David Vilarroig Martinez represented the Cardinals in flight five. He won in straight sets in his first two matches before battling to a finals victory over Mitev of Carthage, 3-6, 6-4 (10-6). Dieter Gonzales cruised to wins over Gilbert (Carthage) and Hammond (Illinois Wesleyan University) in the sixth flight of the singles event. In the finals, Gonzales won 6-4, 6-3 over Schweitzer (Carthage) to capture a first-place finish.
In doubles action, R. Vilarroig Martinez and Sengphommachanh teamed up to beat their Elmhurst (8-0) and Millikin (8-3) opponents, advancing to the finals. The Cardinal dup beat the Firebirds 8-7 (6) to win the No. 1 doubles flight. Penados and Lessa finished in seventh place with an 8-1 win over Elmhurst.
Crossland and Hernandez Ruiz took down their Titans and Firebird competition before falling to Carthage, finishing in second place. Ros and D. Vilarroig Martinez won two of their three doubles matches to claim third place with an 8-2 win over Carthage. In the final doubles flight, Gonzales and Miquel Isern overcame an opening-round loss to earn a fifth-place finish.
A select group of Cardinals will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region Tournament, beginning Sept. 20. The three-day event will take place at Tao Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo. at Washington University in St. Louis' campus.
